The Decans - Corvus, Crater, and Hydra

Updated: Sep 27, 2020

Hydra - The Great Water Serpent

This creature has so many versions, perhaps as many as there are authors on the subject. When I set out, I tried to fulfill the terms and concepts of the beast, and within those guidelines to strike the essence of fetid corruption in a terrorized flight, fleeing for its very existence. As the first decan of the constellation Leo, “Righteous Judge ● Righteous Executioner,” it exposes to us the end of that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan. The scripture speaks of his “nothingness” as he slides down the sides of the pit into eternal torture, the hell made for Satan and his angels. Men will look on him in wonder that they were deceived by such a one.

Contrary to the standard sky sculpture of Hydra, I fulfilled the ancient descriptions of the serpent and gave it nine heads. It is such a large constellation it takes in about one-fourth of the of the heavenlies. Supposedly, it was a water or swamp reptile. The interesting thing is its home was reportedly the Lake of Lerna near Argos. Lerna was said to be the entrance to the Underworld. Joseph A. Seiss in his book, The Gospel in the Stars, notes the Lernean beast was the image of this corrupt world. (pg. 136)

Hydra has two other smaller constellations “attached” to it or is in its direct vicinity. They are Crater and Corvus.

Crater - The Cup of Damnation

The writers of the night sky all agree as to the representation of the constellation/decan Crater. It is in the form of a pot or the Jewish altar turned upside down emptying its contents. Some say it has two handles for gripping. I suppose the question is of its contents. The Christian scribes believe it contains the wrath of God. It is an intense, unmitigated anger at that. It is filled with fire and brimstone which is being dumped on the back of the fleeing snake. More than that, its contents are the corruptions caused by the nations’ fornications. It is a wine of wrath with no diluting additives. It is the pure rage of God on Satan and his angels for rebelling and trying to destroy His creation.

It also includes those individuals who have thought it to be a big thrill to harass those of us who are on our knees outwardly and inwardly before the Lord. The followers of God appear to be weak like a bunch of bleating sheep. Those corrupt individuals have tried to cause us to chase after the worthless wonders of this world. Fortunately, we have an Advocate before the Father to save us “bleaters” – the “harassers” do not. And, of course, neither does the “fleer”. We have chosen the cup of salvation. The “harassers” along with their god of this world have chosen the cup of wrath. There is no in between! No loopholes.

Last of the constellation/decans in this configuration is next, Corvus.

Corvus - Ravenous Raven of Revelation

The word raven as found in Webster’s Dictionary, in Latin, is corvus, so named after its cry.The largest of the crows (ravens) has as its scientific name corvus corax. This is the noun.Raven as a verb transitive is: to devour greedily, to seize forcibly. As an intransitive verb it means: to prowl hungrily; search for prey or plunder. Also, it is described as devouring food or prey greedily coupled with a voracious appetite.

The stars were set in their places long ago and given ancient names by Yahweh who, then, gave their names and explanations to the ancients who would be in the Jewish lineage. From there the signs were spread throughout humanity to the ends of the world. The significance of the former statement is to put in focus the interrelationship between God’s ancient indication of this creature and Mankind’s modern usage in his scientific delineation. Also, when looking into the meaningful actions of this bird, God has chosen the right fowl to represent “. . . unto every feathered fowl, . . .” of Ezekiel 39:17.Or, perhaps, the Lord first created the raven for what He entertained was to be Satan’s demise. After all, I think the essence of the raven is that of being a “gluttonous, garbage collector.”
