McCulley painted Orion as a regal figure, dressed in appropriate attire, expressing His princely status. In His left hand, He holds the “Egyptian crook,” indicating that all earthly power belongs to Him. In His right hand, He holds the seven churches under the care of the Holy Spirit. This proclaims Him as the holder of complete heavenly authority. Hanging from the belt is the flaming sword of Orion.

The sword indicates the progenitor of all. It is made up of the Orion Nebula and the multitude of stars and gases out of which more new spheres are being made than anywhere else in the universe. Here is a reality-symbolic connection.

What you see as a metaphor is the reality from which it comes: John 1:1-5: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men, and the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”
